When I wait, and when I can’t wait

B-SIDE

I always sleep long hours because my body is a mess if I don’t get eight hours of sleep. I guess you could say I get bad gas mileage. If you stick to the car analogy, I get bad gas mileage but my acceleration is amazing. Ever since I was young, there are times when I get fixated on something to the point where I tune out what others are talking about and only think about that one thing. Sometimes the discussion may be about something completely unrelated, but I will occasionally get some sort of hint or clue from what they are saying, and immediately want to just cut them off, go home, and write it down before I forget. This is rude and I of course feel bad, but to me this is very important. These hints are like living things to me and I feel that they will be blown away by the wind through my fingers if I don’t carry them home gently. I realize how absurd it might be but it is something I just can’t change.

I don’t take pictures every day. Though, if I come across something that I want to shoot, then I might end up taking pictures every day. It is not like I have work every day either. There are some older photographers that say, “always carry your camera and shoot every day,” and I just tell them “go right ahead.” I don’t have a problem with shooting each day, but I think more than just shooting, it is important to understand how things are perceived on a daily basis through the lens of a camera. So there are some days where I take a nap and read and my day is over, but for example this month (it is August 26th), I am traveling a lot and I feel like I am building up energy from all of the places I am visiting. Osaka, Kyoto, Niigata, Kyoto, Nara, Niigata. I participated in a talk event in Osaka. I visited a publisher in Kyoto. I visited Niigata to shoot for the 3rd time on a new project that I began last year and to visit and study some ruins. My second trip to Kyoto this month I did a meet and greet at a University regarding a project that began in 2012, one that is scheduled to be announced next year. I also went to Nara to shoot something for the same project. Then I went back to Niigata for a meeting. I may have written it in an article or said it in an interview sometime but taking photos is a lot like “hunting.” You can’t get a shot of your target without waiting, but you can’t also just wait randomly. Where is the prey coming from, when will it come, which way is the wind blowing, are you prepared to wait out in the cold. It’s the same. And of course, you take the shot. Even if the situation isn’t perfect, if you feel that you will never get this chance again, you take the shot. If it is not the case, then you wait. Waiting for the shot is bad for your health and it is even worse for you mentally. I am aware of this, but to me, thinking about the moment that will come gives me great joy and I believe that I am able to exhibit my utmost strength while waiting. This month was full of “waiting”. I of course did have a few shoots, but most of my time was spent being shown things that I wanted to photograph. So even though it was difficult to not be able to shoot them at the time, it felt good thinking about when the time comes that I will be able to.
